Making maize at home is an easy and cost effective process. Commercial milling removes the germ to increase the life span of the maize flour although this is the most nutritious part of the maize. If you grow corn in your home, you can perform maize flour process at home. All you need to do this is a milling machine and dried maize.
Get the maize and immerse it in boiling water for not less than five minutes and then wait until the seeds are cool enough to handle. You will then need to cut the sharp end before drying the corn. Make sure the corn is completely dry before you can process it. Besides, using wet seeds in maize flour milling process will only make the grinding hard.
Feed the corn into the maize flour machine for processing. You can do this through the hopper and then turn the crank if you are using a hand operated machine. You can only grind two cups in five minutes because the manual machine is extremely slow. It is important to repeat the process one more time in order to break any remaining particles. You can use an electric machine which is much faster. Make sure to introduce the grains is small quantities that the machine can handle easily. It is also important to break for a few minutes to allow the machine to cool off. Once you are sure the maize is completely processed, store it in airtight containers in a dry place. The maize flour milling process should take you less than one hour.
